This made the front page news and the public was in Strong Opposition. The owner is Greg Valen cancelled his project, and he is a willing seller(I love him for this, knowing this land is Sacred and Should be Preserved and Protected). This purchase is Priority because this has been since 2019, he is in his 70's, and has been patiently waiting for this PONC purchase. Covidl9, taxes, and mortgage payments, also, the real estate boom in Kona. This is our first experience with PONC, and your favorable will be a huge factor, so we can move forward to Authorize the Director of Finance to enter into Negotiations for the acquisition. I have attached the Front Page News, as well as a Video that shows this land. The project or any major development of this land will only be negative regards being built in a Floodway, heading directly to our most popular Body Surfing Beaches, Magic Sands and Pahoehoe Beach. This purchase would be a Fiendly Resolution and I have heard ALL GOOD HAPPY responses to purchasing this land for a PARK :) This land is Sacred of La'aloa Pahoehoe, Kamehameha I and Alapai. It would expand our Public Park across Pahoehoe, it would minimize the danger of Flood, already heavy rain flows over Alii Drive and over the Public Park. The original owner did illegal bulldozing, I have attached the AIS file. Also, built an illegal concrete wall, and was sited to remove it, and as of now, its still standing. This purchase meets the strategies for the Kona Community Development Plans, Future Growth Should Provide More Parks! Alii Drive already has too many Condos. Hawaiian Tradition is being lost, and we need more Agricultural and Cultural Resources, and Preserve Open Space. Climate Changes, Erosion, Run off Pollution. and Protect Flood Plains. Plant Native Hawaii Trees, and Flowers ( the Alii Chiefs residence in the 1700's loved flower gardens and coconut trees) By keeping open space of green landscape, it will be effective for the long term for our Public Environment. Protect our Public Beaches, threat to Life and Public Park. Also, planting trees will slow Tsunami situation. This is the Ahupua'a of Pahoehoe. This was named for Chiefess Pahoehoe-wahine-iki-a-ka-laii). (Pukui and Elbert 1986:174) Personal note, I did a solo dance at the celebration of the Hawaiian Dictionary of Mary Kawena Pukui, who was a personal friend of my Ohana). The celebration was at the Neil Blaisdell on Oahu. I recall it was a huge event. My family was associated with King Kalakaua. He had his summer house on Alii drive. He was also the Caretaker of these agricultural lands. He loved horses, and created the Kapiolani Park of 300 acres on Oahu. On this land he loved Polo and often invited the Paniolo's from Waimea to this land. I loved riding horses, and rode horses at Kapiolani Park in the 1950's. Where the tennis courts are now, was the Diamond Head Stables. I know King Kalakaua would approve to bring horses here and have a Park! Horse racing was a favorite sport of Hawaiian Ali'i ( Royalty)., and wealthy businessmen in the 1800's, Pahoehoe Park is now only a narrow park. It is popular now for picnics. In the old days, it was for Surfing and Canoeing. Sea wall ruins our shoreline. The Sea is rising and in the Future this park will disappear. The real shoreline is in the middle of Ali'i Drive. As described by missionary, William Ellis (1963) described a visit to Pahoehoe in 1823 and described a Canoe house "We walked on to Pahoehoe, where we entered a large house, in which many workmen were Employed making canoes. About 50 people soon after assembled around us. we took our leave, and proceeded along the shore to Kahaluu".The sugar cane plantation train came to this land in the 1800's and my ancestors came from there as canoe builders, fishermen, and plantation workers. Ellis mentioned the water way/now a floodway, upland to the coastal residence and fishing shoreline, this was used to transport the wood from Mauka for Canoe making. In contrast, with Holualoa there is believed Royal Activities at this Kaumalumalu, the Ahupua'a of this area. Habitation is believed a site for the Royal Ali'i. King Kamehameha is believed to have spent time in Holualoa Royal Center as a Child. This Water way was the connection, Mauka to Makai. Here the boundary strikes the Judd Trail. The Great Wall of Kuakini runs parallel to the coastline and is found mauka of this land. This is now a Cultural Significance of the Hawaii Register of Historic, monument.. This land documents 23 identified HISTORIC PROPERTIES, in the March 17, 2008 State of Hawaii DLNR, State Historic Preservation Division. All sites that remain intact since the mass grading that occurred after the circa 1980, are determined significant under Criterion D, important to History and Prehistory.Site (807 1) is determined of permanent habitation, likely to be HIGH STATUS! The warranty deed of this land states, "Buyer acknowledges and agrees that archeological sites have been discovered within the "Ho'omalumalu Ali'i project...Required is Preservation, regarding Historic and Culturally significant sites on the property.
