Aloha to the Hawaii County Council: AY 1 21
This is a letter of support and a testimony to continue having the bronze sculptor
piece, Hoomalule Upena Kiloi - Metamorphosis of a Net Fisherman, at a site location
near Liliuokalani Gardens & Park as recommended by Director Maurice Messina and
sculptor, Henry Bianchini of Hilo.
Many of us walk and picnic at Liliuokalani Park regularly with friends and family. The
new site location is an area that also once had a picnic table that was not replaced.
Instead it was left as is and gradually park goers and visitors would use that site as
needed. However, the sculptor piece would also enhance that area just as where it is
located and it does need to be near the water. Where Hoomalule currently stands has
also brought about a lot of positive activity to the area with families picnicking nearby,
children playing near it, people sunbathing and enjoying the weather, and many
taking photos with Hoomalule. Visitors have stopped by to take note of it and
sometimes will ask someone nearby if they know more about it. One day some art
students came by to examine the statue and take notes. Maybe another budding
sculptor? And during the recent graduation week -- leis by students and photos were
taken with Hoomalule and around the area. Many have gotten to accept the sculptor
piece in the area and I have not met any member who does not like it! It has brought
upon a lot of positive activity and energy unlike what I have read in the newspaper or
heard from members of "The Friends." Hoomalule adds art to our diverse cultures in
an area visited by many!
We believe Hoomalule belongs near the ocean and it is not within Liliuokalani Gardens,
but outside and across it. Some of us who grew up in Waiakea Houselots and went to
Waiakea I<ai School always knew the garden boundary was the road because the makai
ocean side by Isles and Moku Ola belonged to the community with easy access. I would
also not want it relocated in an area not suited to it and having the art world abroad
wonder why our Hilo community is not embracing art!
Due to these reasons and the positive activity where Hoomalule is located -- our
families and friends support having Hoomalule Upena Kiloi relocated in that same area
near Isles as its new home. It belongs near the ocean and near Liliuokalani Park.
