We are David Kaapu and. I Michael Kaleikim, and we serve as the West Hawaii and East Hawaii Commissioners, respectively, for the Hawaiian Homes Connnission. We write in strong support of the afore- mentioned resolution celebrating the Centennial of the Hawaiians Homes Commission Act of j 1920, as amended. As you know, this July 9t1i will mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of the HHCA into law by then-U.S. President Warren G. Harding. The passing of this Act was the culmination of several years of hard work by Ah h i Puuh nua oNa Hawaii and the Territorial Legislature to address the poor living conditions of many native Hawaiians disenfranchised from their lands after the Great Mahele and the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Since that time, the Hawaiian Homes Commission has awarded nearly 10,000 leases to residential, agriculture and i a pastoral lands with decades of insufficient funding to develop adequate infrastructure or programming to address native Hawaiian rehabilitation. We thank Councilwoman and homesteader, Sue Lee Loy, for introducing this important resolution honoring the hard work of our Prince, Kuhio Kalanianaole, and strongly urge its passing. Comm. N ._ Ref.
