Aloha,
My name is Susan Barnes. I have lived in North Kohala since the late 1980's. It is my home.
i
Mahukona has always been a special place to me, my family, and visiting friends. It is possible to swim there on the many days that
it is raining in Hawi and Kapa'au,or when it is so hot the keiki are melting, without having to drive down the coast to the beaches. It
is possible to pop down there for sunsets any time. It is possible to play and listen to music,to picnic,to party,to cook,to dance,to
walk,to camp,to talk story,to be alone or in company. It is possible to teach children to swim there,to fish,to watch whales, to
relax there.
The lifestyle of the residents of Kohala is inextricably bound up with Mahukona. Some of our kupuna were raised there, in the old
days. A big part of the history of Kohala permeates the air there. It has mana. It has aloha. i
