Kohala and I request that everything possible be done to acquire the 640 acres now owned by a company. Since I have lived in Hawi for the past 7 years, I belong to a group of women who call themselves, "The Mermaids". Weekly we meet at Mahukona and swim up or down the coast, then enjoy a pot-luck lunch together. This is a way of life for our bodies, minds, and spirits. It is precious for me and the 20 or so ladies who participate in these activities. Even during the pandemic, we still swam at Mahukona in tiny groups to keep up our health. This land is also an important gathering place for parties, musicians, family gatherings, and individuals. It has been the site of many happy family parties for us. Also. I frequently walk along the train bed with friends and stop along the way to have prayers. It is also a place that I love to come to do Plein air painting because of it's beauty. In my senior halau, Na Kapula, we have several senior members who grew up living on the land of Mahukona. When I told them of this petition, they became very agitated that somehow their childhood land might not be available for them to use. For these precious living treasures, the kapunas, and for generations to come please vote to buy this land. Mahalo nui for your service, Elaine and Robert Losey Hawi, HI 96719 Comm.
