County Council Finance Committee Subject: Resolution 145-21 Mahukona ;t I strongly support Resolution 145, enabling the County to negotiate for public ownership and protection of the coastal strip of land at Mahukona in North Kohala. The coastal area from Mahukona to Kapa'a is a beautiful, practically untouched coastal strip of both cultural and historical importance. Over the years I have appreciated the unique bay at Mahukona for regular swimming, hiking, and just hanging out with friends. Mahukona is the only place along the entire North Kohala coastline where it is safe to enter the ocean and I see a number of Kohala people there enjoying that access every time I go there. The primitive area extending north along the coast and linking to Kapa'a Park is provides hiking trails for exercise, whale watching and just enjoying nature. The county park with its picnic tables and pavilion provide meeting places to enjoy a beautiful ocean setting. This stretch of coastline is utterly unique. It is exactly the type of land that the General Plan Historical Sites Policies and the North Kohala Community Development Plan called for the County to acquire. Please preserve it so that the public can continue to enjoy regular access. Thank you for considering this. John Winter Comm. N 2. AS _ Ref. To: Ref. bate JUN 1 5 2W] 1
