County Council Finance Committee
Subject: Support of Resolution 145-21 Mahukona
Aloha County Council members,
Ka Makani O Kohala Ohana is a non-profit community corporation that has
supported open and public lands at Mahukona for thirty three years. We urge you
to vote in favor of Resolution 145-21.
Formed in 1988 as Citizens for Protection of the North Kohala Coast, our
organization has had a registered membership of over 400 families that have
supported us through many issues of coastal preservation, including help raise
$20.9 million to conserve 390 acres of formerly private oceanfront property.
Since the founding of the County Open Space Fund in 2006, in cooperation
with other Kohala groups, we have nominated Kohala coastal lands, including
Mahukona, to the Mayor's annual priority list of important lands to conserve.
Mahukona land between Mahukona and Kapa'a Parks is the only wahi pang
that has appeared on the list virtually every year since 2006. The current 2020
POMC priority lists Mahukona as #1 and #3. The reason the County has not put
forward this resolution before this is there was not a willing seller. Thanks to
Hawaiian Islands Land Trust and Na Kalai Wa'a, we now have that key element.
Mahukona is the prime ocean fishing and recreational area in the North
Kohala district. The North Kohala Community Development Plan, Ordinance # 08-
151, provides Strategy 1.2: Acquire coastal lands that should be preserved as open
space and singles out the purchase of Mahukona land along with other lands (see
attached map from the NKCDP).
Ka Makani O Kohala Ohana pledges its resources and energy to seeking
matching funding to help in the purchase of Mahukona.
