Re: Agreement with the United States Geological Survey
Enclosed is a resolution to enter into an agreement with the United States Geological
Survey (USGS)to provide $48,880 for the purpose of continuing the Cooperative Flood-
Monitoring system on the Island of Hawaii. This program is to collect data to map
flood-prone areas for land-use management and the planning and designing of flood
management systems such as bridges, culverts, and levees.

A. REQUEST:
A resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement between the County of Hawaii and the United
States Geological Survey (USGS)for the purpose of continuing the Cooperative Flood-Monitoring program
on the Island of Hawaii.

B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
This agreement with the USGS is an annually budgeted,joint funding agreement where the County of
Hawaii contributes$48,880 toward the flood-monitoring program for the collection of long-term systematic
data of annual peak streamflow. The data collected is used to map flood-prone areas for land use
management, and planning and designing flood management systems such as bridges, culverts, and levees.
The agreement covers the cost for station operation and maintenance, quality assurance, real-time data
display on the USGS website and data archival. Data will be collected by the USGS and stored in the USGS
National Water Information System database and made publicly available on the USGS website.
The following amounts cover the cost of the necessary field and analytical work directly related to this
program for the period covering 1011121 - 9/30122.
County portion $48,880 75.5%
USGS portion $15,840 24.5%
