HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0279.045 2020-2022 i Aloha County Council Members, I am humbly submitting testimony in opposition to the nomination of Shani Armbruster to the Leeward Planning Commission. Though Shani Armbruster may meet the qualifications for the position, her extensive background with Tinguely Development poses great conflict of interest with Hawaii County creating questionable intent. The numerous projects associated with Tinguely Development and Hawaii County should speak volumes to the perceived bias in future developmental decisions and advisory that would be provided to the Mayor, Council, and Planning Director. Shani Armbruster's lack of experience associated with Hawaiian cultural land use does not provide well rounded knowledge and representation of the community in whole. The ability to adequately balance land development while incorporating conservation should not be overlooked in the decision to appoint a candidate to the LPC. Mayor Roth's candidate selection expands beyond Shani Armbruster to include Ku'ulei Keakealani. This candidate has the background and cultural experience to provide a well- rounded representation of land development while being mindful to land conservation. Candidates with similar qualities should be explored to provide proper checks and balances to j the LPC. The primary reason in choosing to relocate back to Hawaii, specifically the Big Island, is the current unique atmosphere that exists. The exponential, uncontrolled growth seen on Oahu, and Maui as of recent is challenging overall infrastructure. This is evident as of recent tourism increase with eased Covid restrictions. Hawaii island is capable of growing responsibly with the right people in place that cultivate a balance between growth development and land conservation. We need a commissioner that understands the needs of the community as a whole. Ms. Armbruster does not represent this perspective. I urge you to vote "NO" on communication 279. Mahalo Nui.
