Subject: Support of Resolution 145-21 Mahukona
To: Council Chair Maile David, Hawaii County Council
The Board of Sustainable Kohala strongly supports Resolution 145-21, enabling the County to negotiate for public
ownership and protection of Mahukona.
Preserving this historically important land which is so precious to the community is of greatest importance. For over
20 years, we have personally appreciated the exquisite setting of Mahukona for regular swimming, hiking, and
meeting friends. There are very few places along the North Kohala coastline where it is safe to enter the ocean, but
the ladder and deep bay at Mahukona offers swimmers safety and accessibility to beautiful coral reefs.
Moreover, hiking trails north of the bay allow for whale watching and safe hiking when the water is too rough for
swimming. Each of us has spent many wonderful hours visiting with family and friends there.
Mahukona has a rugged but natural beauty that provides both our local families and general public great pleasure.
Please preserve this land so that we can continue to enjoy regular access.
Thank you for all your hard work.
