Subject: Support of Resolution 145-21 Mahukona
I am writing on behalf of The Jupiter Research Foundation(JRF) and as a 35-year resident of North
Kohala. JRF and I support the 1)preservation of the cultural and natural resources, 2) facilitating
public access and preserving portions of the Alaloa (trail), 3)providing cultural, educational, and
recreational opportunities, 4) protecting open space, and 5)preserving the historical character of
Kohala and the Mahukona Properties, the County should acquire a property interest in all or a portion
of the Mahukona Properties.
My husband and I have been advocating to protect this part of the coastline since 1990 as members of
Citizens for Protection of the North Kohala Coastline which is now Ka Makani O Kohala Ohana
(Kako'o) for current and future generations. See Fig 1 of myself and daughter now 31 years old!
I have been to community meetings regarding the development of Mahukona for anything from
resorts, golf courses and even a public boat ramp. It is well established that the nitrocnpollution from
sewage and golf courses have negative effects on coastal waters and coral reefs. I am a Licensed
Captain and while a boat ramp would be nice for local mariners, it would require significant build out
and maintenance of the basin and a substantial jetty to make it safe, as Mahukona gets huge surf and
boats are known to go up on the rocks (Fig 2).
1 have taught keike and adults to swim and snorkel at Mahukona. My husband I used to take our own
keike hiking along the trails and to swing in the crook of this tree(Fig 3).
Ko'a Heiau Holomoana , located within the site, is an important and rare navigational heiau that needs
to be preserved for future cultural practice of non-instrument navigation and open ocean voyaging.
(Fig 4).
This is a tremendous opportunity for community groups and the State to partner in developing a public
use, educational, cultural and recreational area for all to prosper from, both residents and visitors alike.

P.S. These pictures were taken by my husband, who considered Mahukona a very sacred place; this is
also where he died. I know he too would fully support Resolution 145-21 Mahukona.
