Subject: Support of Resolution 145-21 Mahukona
Aloha Council Chair Maile David
I was made aware of Resolution 145-21 Mahukona. Read the resolution with warm thoughts
of our childhood playground. I wholeheartedly support Resolution 145-21.
I was born and raised in Kohala when Kohala Sugar was at its "heyday". Mahukona provided
our families access to it's many natural resources. Mahukona gave us the opportunity to
swim in a safe environment. Camping, fishing, water sports and gatherings at the
pavilion and also at the wharf were special times enjoyed by all of the Kohala families.
I am old enough to remember when the bags of sugar were loaded on the boats to be
transported to the sugar refineries. The boat winch holds dear memories as our Dad and
many others used it for fishing expeditions. A ladder was provided near the boat ramp for
keiki and adults to safely enter the water. Such treasured memories for us Kohala
people. Hope to be able to share our experiences with future generations.
As adults, we learned the cultural aspects of the Mahukona area. I am sure Kohala's kupuna
could enlighten us of more cultural practises.
The more I write, the more sentimental I become. Preserving our special Mahukona is of
utmost importance for the community and surrounding communities.
I encourage the council to please support Resolution 145-21 Mahukona. A special spot for so
many Kohala residents.
