The regular meeting of the Committee on Parks and Recreation and Public

Safety was called to order at 9:01 a.m., in the Council Chambers, Hilo, by

Comm. 176.4: REQUESTS A PRESENTATION OF THE AUGUST 2021 HAWEO AWARD
CERTIFICATE TO BERTRAM CARVALHO, JR., RETIRED FIRE MEDICAL
SPECIALIST II — HAWAI`I FIRE DEPARTMENT

CHR. INABA: Mahalo. Can I please get a motion to close file on
Communication 176.4?

Motion to Close File: Ms. Kierkiewicz moved to close file on Comm. 176.4. Seconded
by Ms. Villegas.
CHR. INABA: And we have our ohana from the Fire Department here today. I'd
like to call up our awardee Mr. Carvalho, and whoever fromI believe it's
Captain Lam from the Fire Department to kind of give us a briefing on our
awardee. Mr. Carvalho, if you'd like to take a seat here at the front table.
Good morning, Mr. Carvalho, and thank you so much for being here today. A
special one today, a little different. Usually it's for a specific event that someone
earns this or you know something that they do, but this is for a whole career's
worth of services to our community. So I'll hand it over to Captain Lam, now. If
you could please press the button and introduce yourself for the record. Mahalo.
CERTIFICATE OF (Note: At this time, the August 2021 HAWEO Award was presented to
APPRECIATION: retired Fire Medical Specialist II Bertram Carvalho Jr., of the Hawaii
Fire Department in recognition of going above and beyond the call of
duty and service to our community. His supervisor Captain Michael Lam
came forward and provided statements regarding his acts of heroism.
Chair Inaba provided a celebratory Hawaiian Chant.)
CHR. INABA: Congratulations Mr. Carvalho. And we'll close up the
communication and if we could take a photo and bring our ohana from the Fire
Department and Mrs. Carvalho up as well. So there's a motion on the floor right
now, to close file on Communication 176.4 all those in favor please say "aye."
Vote on Comm. 176.4: The motion to close file on Comm. 176.4 was carried
(Approved) by the following voice vote:
