Subject: support Reso. 170-21
I strongly support Reso. 170-21 to authorize negotiations for acquisition of Wai`ele utilizing the PONC fund.
I believe it is vital to preserve open space and shoreline access in the Puna district, as well as culturally
essential to save the remnants of traditional uses of the land. Recently this parcel has been threatened by
adjacent illegal development. It is of critical urgency to immediately secure and protect this land. Puna has
lost so many ecosystem services and cultural sites in ill-planned development. We must save the little that
is left. Protecting open spaces protects the resources, the healthy ecosystems that our communities
depend on. Shoreline access in the Puna district is becoming increasingly more limited and restrictive with
private development along the shoreline, and lava damage to formerly beloved locations. We need public
spaces.
