Aloha County Council and Dept of Transportation
Please see testimony below and those of us who originally found the funds to work on the garden areas within and
around the roundabout as a part of a Puna Outdoor Circle project, strongly object to Rene Siracusa's name being
attached to the roundabout and the surrounding areas.
NO to Reso 172-21

Absolutely not!!!! on naming the roundabout for Rene Siracusa. This roundabout garden project was
started with a grant from the Outdoor Circle, Puna chapter and Rene took this over and hyjacked the
funds and in fact had to finally destroy the organization when she was told that she could not take a
property in Nanawale for herself since all property must go to the main organization in Honolulu. So
she started Malama O Puna in order to secure this property without any approval by the original Puna
Outdoor Circle members. She always claimed to be a founder of this chapter which was an outright lie.
Besides "doing"so much for"her" community, she was a notorious self serving "leader"
Ashley you were not on the scene when these things took place and Rene was very good at covering
her tracks. Call the Outdoor Circle in Honolulu and see if these facts can be confirmed before you
leap.

Aloha, friends!
i
Hope you are well! Our office has been busy bringing ideas to life in 2021:
From securing S5 million for a statewide green jobs corps program and co-leading a
year-long process through Vibrant Hawaii to craft a Comprehensive Economic
Development Strategy and Action Plan by community, to introducing a resolution
proclaiming June as L OBTOA+ Pride Month and co-leading concept design and
execution of the Revitalize Puna community activation, our office is quick to take
action on a range of priorities in large part because of the incredible network of multi-
sector and multi-jurisdictional stakeholders we've brought together to collaborate.

Next week at Council, CD4 is putting forward two resolutions:
• Naming of Pahoa Roundabout after Rene Siracusa: introducing keso. 172-
21 to support the naming of the Pahoa Roundabout in memory of Rene Siracusa
to honor her life, legacy, and significant contributions to Puna; Hawaii Dept. of
Transportation is in support of this request and has committed to installing
naming signage at the roundabout entrance. Committee on Public Works & Mass
Transit will hear this measure Tuesday, Aug. 3 at IPM.
• Acquisition of Wai`ele with PONC funding: introducing Reso. 170-21 to
authorize negotiations for acquisition of Wai`ele utilizing the PONC fund; the
old coastal village of Wai`ele in the ahupua`a of Kanekiki totals 165 acres with 3
2,000 feet of shoreline and contains sacred treasures including fresh water
springs, rare groves of kukui, hau and hala trees, an ancient p6haku (stone)trail, j
ancient burial sites, and animals such as the `io (Hawaiian hawk), `opae`ape`a
(Hawaiian bat), and pueo (Hawaiian owl). Committee on Finance will hear this
measure Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 2pm.
Show your support for these measures by Monday, Aug. 2 at noon! Email support

Be on the look out for communication next week on a virtual community briefing on
next steps with Resilience Action Teams - we're looking at the 2nd week of August for
a webinar. Also, CD4 x Recovery teams are planning on the next Revitalize
Puna community activation in October; we are monitoring COVID numbers, which
factors into our decision if the event will be in-person or virtual as we want to do our
i
part to keep community safe!
Cheers, Mahalo & Be Well,
Ash
