RE: Testimony in favor of Resolution 172-21
TO: Hawaii County Council - Public Works & Mass Transit Committee
Aloha Committee Members,
On behalf of the nonprofit organization, Malama O Puna, we wish to thank the Council for
requesting that the State Department of Transportation name the Pahoa Roundabout after
Rene Siracusa. We feel it is a very fitting recognition for Rene, who passed on June 29,
2020, and who dedicated her decades living in Pahoa to bettering her community. She
was an ardent environmental activist and, once the Roundabout was added to Highway
130 serving as the north entrance to Pahoa town, she sought to work with the State
Department of Transportation to beautify its appearance.
While many have contributed to the effort to beautify the Roundabout, Rene spearheaded
the efforts which included support from the Hawaii Police Department, the Youth
Challenge program, and many volunteers. Again, we thank Councilmember Kierkierwicz
for standing up this resolution and hope the entire County Council supports this action in
recognition of the many years of community service of Rene Siracusa.
Mahalo for your consideration,
