Aloha Hawaii County Council,
We strongly oppose bill 52 and 53. The redesignation and subdivision of TMK (3)3-7-3-
005:015.
As local residents and neighbors to the Kona Acre community, we strongly oppose
rezoning TMK (3)3-7-3-005:015 from agricultural to an urban or residential area. The
property is unique in its location, historical and cultural significance. Located in a
close-knit community where neighbors farm local produce on the adjacent land,
known as Kona Acres. This property should be protected as agricultural land,
consistent with the agricultural properties located within this community. The
tradition of cultivating the land for local goods, shared with the larger Kona
community should continue with support from our community's leaders. Rezoning to
urban or residential would threaten the integrity and culture of this unique
agricultural neighborhood.
The property has known historical sites that are of cultural significance and should be
protected for future generations. The historic sites have been listed in the State
Inventory of Historic places as contributing elements of the Kona Field System, a pre-
and post-contact agricultural complex.
Development continues to change the Kona community, looking to the other islands,
similar rezoning from agricultural to urban has significantly impacted our beautiful
State. The impact of development is often to our detriment, forever altering Hawaii's
culture and natural landscapes.
It has become increasingly important to protect the integrity and history of
undeveloped land, as in the case of TMK (3)3-7-3-005:015. Rezoning this land will
forever impact the community and will potentially destroy priceless historical and
cultural artifacts. We oppose the rezoning of this property and ask for your strong
consideration to preserve the unique agricultural and historically significant land
remaining in Kona.
