Subject: Letter of SUPPORT for Resolution 161
Aloha to the Honorable Members of the Hawaii County Council,
'0 Kalamanamana Harman ko`u inoa. I am the eldest child of Kekoa and Pelehonuamea Harman, a
graduate of Ke Kula `o Nawahiokalani`opu`u, and Hilo High School and I am currently preparing to enter my
junior year at Dartmouth College. I apologize for being unable to provide live testimony since the time
difference and my school schedule does not allow me to. Please, however, accept this letter of support for
Resolution 161 that I am sending from New Hampshire.
As a lineal descendant of Ka`u, I want to see the coastline and Ka`u`s unique landscape and natural
resources preserved in perpetuity for generations to come. This has been a goal of our kupuna and the
Kali] community for many years and it is exactly aligned to the intent of PONC resources.
When you leave Hawaii like I did to attend college, you quickly realize that there is no place like home and
no people like our people. It is because we have been raised to have aloha. Aloha means sharing what you
have and not expecting anything in return and taking the time to sit and talk out problems, face to face.
Having aloha for the `aina means taking only what you need from our oceans, leaving places even cleaner
when you depart, and keeping the world beautiful and sustainable for future generations. It also means
speaking up when there is an opportunity to save our `aina and prevent development.
Aloha `aina is so important to us all and that should be where we come together as a people and as a
community. The old saying is Pupukahi I Holomua. UNITE to move forward. Please preserve Kiolaka'a,
Ka`u today so that our generation and those who come after us can continue what our kupuna worked so
hard to do: to take care of this beautiful `aina and continue to perpetuate aloha here in Hawaii.
Me ka `oia`i`o,
Kalamanamana Harman
