Subject: Support Resolution 161
Dear County Council,
I wish to express my support of the aquistion of the Kiolaka`a ahupua'a in the Ka`u district.
From conversations with colleagues, it is clear that Kiolaka`a is a gem. It contains plant species that are rare or not
found in other places and has a forest and anchialine pools that in better condition than in most places on the island. It
also is of cultural significance and we cannot risk that the `ike within this area be lost to bulldozers and development.
Isolation caused by lava flows and the remoteness of the Ka`u region have kept this place in excellent condition and it
supports very important native biodiversity and cultural value that is too precious for us to give up. I ask that
Kiolaka`a be acquired and put into conservation land for not only the present species that are there, but also for the
future human generations that will enjoy this special place.
Aloha,
Rebecca Ostertag
