Aloha Chair David and Council Members,
I urge passage of this resolution that authorizes the Department of Finance to begin negotiations to
acquire acquisition of five Kiolaka'a properties with PONC funds. These properties represent a rugged
and relatively pristine landscape that hold an abundance of natural and cultural resources distributed
from the coast to upland-environments. Formerly protected by their remoteness and single ownership,
these lands now face subdivision and conversion to commodities for offshore speculation. Please
protect these important wahi pana as the 'aina of Hawai'i.
The Ala Kahakai Trail Association has demonstrated its ability to organize resources to protect such
important landscapes and to communicate with various communities across the island. They are
intimately familiar with this'aina and will make good stewards.
