Aloha e County Councilmember,
The Family Assessment Center supports Res.179-21 without any amendments. This testimony serves
as a compilation of who the Center's helped. The FAC remains on the frontlines of preventing and ending
ohana houselesness in our community.
Houselessness is a multifaceted issue. However, more and more ohana earn wages incapable of
affording housing. The inability to afford housing forces more and more ohana into compromising situations.
®hang are moving away from home in search of affordable housing, two to three ohana living in a home
meant for one ohana, resorting to sleeping in their car without the security of a safe parking space, or
surviving unsheltered in a community without an ohana emergency shelter.
There is truly not enough housing available to contributing citizens of our community. The current
scarcity of housing dictates housing affordability. Housing is awarded to the highest earner not the hardest
worker. The scarcity allows discrimination to flourish and prices to skyrocket. The conditions of housing can be
improved by developments like Honua'ula.
Honua'ula is an opportunity to build 112 affordable apartments for our community. This is a huge
effort to house our working class ohana. This development serves as a beacon and blueprint for future afford-
able housing projects. A home provides safety, security, and a place to heal. Honua'ula is a strong effort to
end ®hana houselessness in our community.
