Subject: Support for Honua'ula Living Community
Aloha Councilmember Inaba:
I am writing in strong support of Honua'ula Living Community's 201H application to build 112
affordable apartments in your district.
Our communities have been dealing with problems associated with the lack of affordable housing
for a long time and the COVID crisis has made it that much more urgent. Our island would greatly
benefit from your approval of Honua'ula Living Community to effectively address this issue.
I am a single mother of 5 children and have been living in our car since April when my
husband passed away. I have a job and work night shift at Texaco while my children sleep
at their Aunty's house. I have savings and enough money for security deposit and rent but I
have not been able to find a rental. There are multiple applications for available rentals and
with my family size it is difficult to find appropriate housing. The landlords that I have
applied to say that many of their applicants are actually off island people looking to move
here. There isn't enough housing for locals like me, much less new residents. I hope that
through the approval of Honua'ula Living Community's 201H application, our County will move
closer to effectively address this long-standing issue and provide our residents with much needed
housing.
