This letter is in strong support of Res 179-21. Honua`ula Living Community will provide Advisory Board
112 affordable apartments at 60% or below the Area Median Income (AMI)-- in the
Kealakehe area and they will offer 1 to 4 bedroom units. 44 of these units will offer Georgine Busch
project-based vouchers, similar to Ulu Wini, for households with an income between 30%
and 50% of the AMI. We have had no builds since Lei Ohana and Lei Kupuna. There has
been no housing built for large families, this project will provide much needed units. Greg Chun, PhD
According to the 2019 Hawaii housing Plan Study(pp. 36-40), Hawaii County will need
an additional 13,303 housing units by 2025 to meet housing demand.
We have built far less and need drastic systemic change to meet this need. Current data Marta Derieg, MD
indicates that 30% of all homeless individuals on the Big Island are children. Research
continues to show multiple and long term negative impacts on children who experience
homelessness. According to the CDC, preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences Claren Kealoha-
(ACEs) can occur when we help children grow up in a stable environment. Our Beaudet, Psy.D.
community would greatly benefit from more opportunities for stable housing options.
