Bills 52 and 53 that seek to designate agricultural land to urban and
agricultural land to residential will negatively impact our natural
resources and cultural landscape. North Kona's natural resources are
the trees and plants that line the gently curved roadway of Mamalahoa
Highway. Cultural resources are homes and buildings, which are over a
i
hundred years old. A significant archeological site found on the land
that Bills 52 and 53 address is a huge cave with burned nuts that early
Hawaiians used in sacred ceremonies. North Kona is susceptible to
flooding during heavy rains. Rezoning from agricultural land to urban
and agricultural land to residential will result in floods that ruin the
natural and cultural landscape of North Kona.
The economic result of redesignation will result in the loss of tourists
who would visit the North Kona area. This means that the County of
Hawaii will lose income that tourists bring in.
Council members, for these reasons, please vote NO on Bills 52 and 53.
