RE: Bill 61 — Support
Aloha Council Chair Maile David and Hawaii County Council Members:
Bill 61 adds $9,500,000 to the Hawaii County budget from Federal funds into the
Hawaii Island Homeowner Assistance Program account. By accepting these funds, the
Office of Housing and Community Development Department will implement and
manage a program to assist homeowners who are struggling to pay their mortgages,
house insurance, and utilities due to COVID-19. They are ready to issue an RFP as
they have with the rental assistance programs.
This program would help to stave off bankruptcies and foreclosures and keep our
families here in Hawaii. It is challenging enough for our working families to be housed
and to own their homes. The COVID-19 pandemic has added to the challenges.
As a faith based community at St. Michael's, we care for the common good. As county
council members representing our entire island community, we know you do too.
Vote yes on bill 61.
