To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing in support of County of Hawaii — State of Hawaii Resolution # 233 21.
Our business, Kona Earth, is an independent, family-owned and operated coffee farm in Holualoa. We are
proud to grow single estate,100% Kona Coffee and be a part of Hawaii's rich, coffee-growing tradition.
In order to protect the reputational value of true Kona coffee, a gourmet specialty coffee known around the
world, it is imperative that so-called Kona "blends" have a minimum of 51% of beans from their claimed
origin, and that their labels specify contents detailed by percentage and origin so that consumers are
aware of what they are purchasing.
Truthful labeling protects consumers and supports local farmers whom, without this protection, have been
negatively impacted economically, with an annual loss of over 14 million dollars. Fairness dictates that
brands that sell lower value "blends" not be able to take advantage of the good Kona name. And they must
be held accountable to these important labeling standards.
Though I wrote specifically of Kona coffee, Hawaiian coffee growers in all regions need and deserve this
important protection..
