RE:Written Testimony in support of Resolution No.224-21
A Grant Relating to the Renovation of the Kapa'au Veterans Wall of Honor
Aloha Council Members:
My Fuertes®hana has been community service members for the past 3 generations in our
beautiful North Kohala. We support most of the Community projects that will honor our'
Kupuna,and especially those that served in the Armed Forces protecting our Freedoms.
We,David and Carol Fuertes were directly involved in this project at initiation over 20
yrs.ago.This was at the suggestion of David Fuertes,embraced by than senior citizens, — —<--4
Veterans and the National Guard Alumni become the central support to see this project CD
through. Planning started a year prior to the North Kohala Community Reunion 2000. At
this reunion it was proposed to the community in planning sessions and Mrs.Gladys Nanbu 1r,
took charge of receiving the names to place on this Wall of Honor. It was for those that
served in all wars prior that were born in North Kohala. It blew up into the hundreds of
names you see on the Boards. I helped type the list out,Ikaika Akima,graduating high
school student,built the Wall as a Community Service project,and the National Guard Group
assisted in erecting it.
With this legacy,it was placed on the lawn of the Senior Center directly in back of our
famous King Kamehameha Statue. Yes,it has been over 20 years,and in dire need of repairs
and renovations. As a Community we are so proud of our projects when we honor the people
of Kohala,especially this in honor of our hometown Veterans and the Wall of Honor is part
of our military monuments. Please support financially the North Kohala National Guard
Alumni Club in this very important project. We cannot let the efforts of 3 generations loose
this proud monument.
