Aloha,
Thank you for accepting my testimony for Resolution 235-21, below: -
Hawai'i Farm-to-Car is a virtual local farmer's market with drive-thru pickup that was developed in response to
COVID 19. The market has been in operation since August 2020 in that time it has supported over 60 different
Big Island farmers, producers, and ranchers. Since the beginning of 2021 this program has generated more than
$106,000.00 in revenue for our producers. The beauty of this market format is that we can provide an easy
outlet for backyard garden enthusiasts as well as those farmers producing on a large scale. With more time and
funding, we aim to support the growth of Big Island agriculture by providing encouragement and education to
those interested in growing food at any scale.
Not only does this program stimulate Big Island's agricultural economy, it has also created a paid position for
me, the Program Coordinator. Hawaii Farm-to-Car has ample room to grow and has the ability to create more
paid positions for Big Island residents in the future.
Our market operates our weekly aggregation and drive-thru distribution by renting space at the Puna Hongwanji
Mission in Kea'au. This rent helps to supplement the Hongwanji's income, as they've had to greatly reduce their
services and traditional fundraising efforts to keep their community safe during COVIDI9.
Grant funding helps us cover our weekly operational costs. We charge a minimal markup to keep prices
accessible for our customer base, so grant funding goes a long way to ensure we can secure the supplies and
labor we need to keep this program running.
I hope this quick snapshot of Hawaii Farm-to-Car helps illuminate how one small local initiative can have a big
impact in our local community! I appreciate your consideration for these funds. They would be put to great use
to broaden our reach and impact and ultimately get even more local food on local tables. The more we can
make the Big Island self reliant, the better!
