Re: Communication 46 which REQUESTS A DISCUSSION WITH THE ADMINISTRATION
REGARDING THE PUBLIC ACCESS, OPEN SPACE AND NATURAL RESOURCES
PRESERVATION FUND
Aloha Hawaii County Council members,
Thank you for the work that you do. I am writing to express my strong support for
Communication 46, which requests a discussion with the administration regarding the Public
Access, Open Space and Natural Resources Preservation Fund (POMC).
The people of Hawaii County approved the charter amendments of the PONC fund through the
general election on Nov. 3, 2020. Now, exactly a year later we are waiting for the administration
to implement the charter amendments that have been law since Nov. 3, 2020.
I was one of many interested parties in the community who advocated for the PONC fund
amendments and was very happy to see that the people of Hawaii County approved the charter
amendments in last year's general election. I thought that the hard work was done, and that now
the funds would be better utilized as directed by the approved charter amendments. Much to my
surprise, nothing has happened and the funds remain largely unused.
Please approve Comm. 46 and see to it that the Administration is held accountable. Now, more
than ever, there is a growing cynicism about government and the effectiveness of putting laws in
place. Please help us to get the PONC fund running as the voters have envisioned and help keep
our confidence in government strong.
