Aloha committee chair and members,
I ask that you support Communicate 461 which is before you today.
I've been intimately involved in and seen the success of the POMC fund. I spearheaded the last two campaigns to
protect 'O'oma II in West Hawai'i. After over a decade, our community scored a final win—one ended with true,
long-term protection for almost 200 acres of coastal land that our community uses and depends upon for their quality
of life including having access to safe, clean, Hawaii'-style recreation and subsistence activities.
Voters have overwhelmingly supported the 2% fund and its successes are now many. Last year voters approved an
amendment requiring funds be set aside to pay for an administrator of the fund - a person who could also help seek
matching funds and pursue grants to match funds for even more and greatly needed land stewardship. Though I'm
unclear as to why this hasn't already been acted upon, now is the time to make good on that initiative by supporting
this communication and following up on its implementation.
Mahalo for supporting the 2% fund which can only work if it has the finances and human resources to make it work.
