Testimony concerning Signage at Transfer Stations in Hawaii County
I am concermed when visiting my local transfer station by the signs with a long list of items that should not be dumped (see photo
attached which was taken at the Honomu location). I believe a similar sign appears at other transfer stations on the island. This
doesn't feel like a very positive approach to improving compliance with regulations concerning public health and environmental issues
(although 1 notice a phone number is provided, but how many people will get round to call it?). Users may simply ignore the sign and
dump these items anyway,which could increase risks to health and to the environment.
I suggest it would likely improve compliance for information to be provided right there to say where these items should most safely be
disposed of. For example a web link or QR code to the appropriate page on the county website could be provided This is especially
important for things that could cause a safety hazard if disposed of incorrectly.
