Subject: Bill 91
Aloha Council Members,
Thank you for this opportunity to testify in support of Bill 91 which would ban glyphosate products from being
used in county parks.
My name is Kilihea Inaba and I am a life long resident of Kaloko, Kona. I live on the slopes of Hualalai, whose
rain waters feed and sustain us.
I thank Council Member Villegas for bringing forward in her first term, a more comprehensive bill to end our
County's use of glyphosate usage. Although glyphosate has been considered environmentally safe over the
years, more research has been done finding harmful effects not only on humans and mammals, but the entire
ecosystem as well. There is no good that comes of glyphosate or the chemical substances that are used in
conjunction with it.
Please support this sensible and straight forward bill that would end glyphosate usage where our keiki play
and grow.
In closing, I want to share that-
"Soils are the foundation of our food security and yet a recent global scientific assessment found that 33
percent of land is degraded due to the erosion, salinization, compaction and acidification and chemical
pollution of our soils" (Food and Agriculture Organization, 2015).
Although we cannot undo the past,we now know better and must do right for the future... for ou ei
Mahalo for your consideration,
Kilihea Inaba
