Subject: Council meeting 11/17 Pesticides in Parks
Aloha Councilmembers and Council Chair,
Mahalo for rehashing this issue to be heard again in Hawaii county, today, with consideration of Herbacides being
used as weed control in the HI county parks. I bring my children to our local parks nearly every day, and there are
areas that we have to avoid and areas that I feel uncomfortable taking them due to the use of chemicals. There are
wonderful guava trees that they would love to eat the fruits from, but at the base, you can see a ring of brown (which
is also unsightly) and everyone knows it, because in this guava field, which is a golf zone in Kamehameha park,there
stand several of these trees, full of fruit, but nobody picks them. They fall and rot. Even around the big toy where the
children play, I have seen them spray for maintenence. It really is a shame. I see babies mouthing the steps that are
coated in rubber which most definitely leaches the chemicals as well as many kids play in the sand they spray with
bare hands, innocently being exposed to a neurotoxin. It is unfortunate.
