Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 506, reports as follows:
Communication No. 506, transmitted by the Honorable Mayor Mitchell D. Roth dated
November 15, 2021, nominates Karie Wakat of Council District 8 to the Cost of Government
Commission.
Executive Assistant to the Mayor Pamaika`i Bartolome introduced the nominee. Ms. Wakat retired in
2019 from the information technology industry where she was employed by IBM as a software engineer.
Ms. Wakat is involved in ocean protection, volunteering with several organizations including Kahulu`u
Bay Education Center's Reef Teach, Ocean Defenders Alliance, and Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii.
If confirmed, Ms. Wakat will serve a term from January 1, 2022 to November 30, 2022.
Ms. Wakat provided a brief background on her herself and her experience.
Committee Member Rebecca Villegas provided comments in support of Ms. Wakat's nomination,
emphasizing her diverse background as an asset to the commission.
Committee Chair Matt Kaneali`i-Kleinfelder also provided comments in support.
Pursuant to Section 5-2.2, Hawaii County Charter,there shall be a cost of government commission
which shall be appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Council.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication No. 506, and
recommends confirmation of the appointment of Karie Wakat to the Cost of Government Commission.
