Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 507, reports as follows:
Communication No. 507,transmitted by the Honorable Mayor Mitchell D. Roth dated
November 16, 2021, nominates Michael Konowicz of Council District 9 to the Cost of Government
Commission.
Executive Assistant to the Mayor Pomaika`i Bartolome introduced the nominee. Ms. Bartolome stated
that Mr. Konowicz has been a resident of South Kohala for the past four years with a longtime
connection to the islands. Mr. Konowicz is a business owner, meteorologist, and journalist. Previously,
Mr. Konowicz served on the local Environmental Commission and the Planning and Zoning
Commission on the mainland. He currently volunteers at World Vision, the American Cancer Society,
and the National MS Society.
If confirmed, Mr. Konowicz would serve a term from January 1, 2022, to November 30, 2022.
Mr. Konowicz briefly elaborated on his background, stating that he would be able to bring analytical
insight, efficient work ethic, and a deep passion for Hawaii to the commission.
Committee Member Herbert M. "Tim"Richards III provided comments in support of the nomination,
emphasizing the importance of critical review and a variety of perspectives in the commission.
Pursuant to Section 5-2.2, Hawaii County Charter, there shall be a cost of government commission
which shall be appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Council.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication No. 507, and
recommends confirmation of the appointment of Michael Konowicz to the Cost of Government
Commission.
