Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 508, reports as follows:

Communication No. 508, transmitted by the Honorable Mayor Mitchell D. Roth dated
November 18, 2021, nominates Daniel Malakie III of Council District 7 to the Cost of Government
Commission.
Executive Assistant to the Mayor P6maika`i Bartolome introduced the nominee. A longtime Hawaii
resident, Mr. Malakie is a retired captain of the United States Army, serving as a medical evacuation
executive officer and pilot. Mr. Malakie is currently employed by Paradise Helicopters as a pilot and
director of safety/operations, and is a Balefire Safety Solutions safety auditor. Mr. Malakie also
volunteers with the Kona General Aviation Committee and the Helicopter Association Safety Working
Group.
If confirmed, Mr. Malakie will serve a term from January 1, 2022, to November 30, 2022.
Mr. Malakie elaborated on his background, emphasizing his ties to Kona and desire to give back to the
community. Mr. Malakie additionally highlighted his attention to detail, willingness to serve the
community, and ability to address issues in different perspectives.
Pursuant to Section 5-2.2, Hawaii County Charter,there shall be a cost of government commission
which shall be appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Council.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication No. 508, and
recommends confirmation of the appointment of Daniel Malakie III to the Cost of Government
Commission.
