HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 292 Draft 01 2020-2022A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING “MALAMA MAKUAHINE: YEAR OF THE MOTHER 2022” IN THE COUNTY OF HAWAIʻI.
WHEREAS, in Hawai‘i, makuahine can encompass all the female caretakers of the family, including mothers, aunts, older female cousins, hānai mothers and even kumu and close friends; and
WHEREAS, those who malama, care for, and nurture us, deserve the utmost support and attention for their own emotional, physical and spiritual well-being; and
WHEREAS, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status, mothers have always moved our society and the world forward and remained steadfast in their pursuit of
a better and brighter future for the next generation; and
WHEREAS, mothers have not traditionally been perceived as essential workers around the world and are often undervalued, demeaned, unappreciated and unpaid; and
WHEREAS, mothers have been the most adversely affected by the COVID 19 pandemic shouldering home, work, childcare, and teaching responsibilities while dealing with health issues, a rise
in domestic violence and massive unemployment; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaiʻi County Committee on the Status of Women plans to lead a series of events, programs, and activities recognizing Malama Makuahine: Year of the Mohter 2022; and
WHEREAS, mothers, and the institution of motherhood, are so critical to society, they are worthy of more than just one celebration a year; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I that it recognizes Malama Makuahine: Year of the Mother 2022 and supports the Hawaiʻi County Committee on the Status of Women as
they take the lead in establishing appropriate programs, ceremonies, roundtables, and activities recognizing the role of mothers.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all individuals are encouraged to partake in events that celebrate Malama Makuahine: Year of the Mother 2022.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this resolution to the Honorable Mitchell D. Roth, Mayor and Mihaela Ryer, Chair of the Hawaiʻi County Committee
on the Status of Women.
