Aloha-
My name is Alexandra Bernstein. I have lived on Hawaii Island for 25 years. We have worked to be firewise by stopping the Round-
Up spraying on roadsides. It would be wonderful if we could stop spraying in parks and other areas. Myself,when I breath it in from
my neighbor's spraying, it gives me a sore throat for days and it certainly smells nasty.
In a place where you can't guarantee that it is dry&wind-free when you spray(because you have a schedule,and because the
weather is changeable)we should not have employees breathing in toxic chemicals,and it should not be on the ground for children
to absorb through their skin. (I have seen park's employees spraying,and I have not seen them in masks that will block chemical
spray.) (In case you do not know,the manufacturer's instructions on Round-Up are to spray only on dry areas and when it is not
windy.)
I've visited parks after spraying,and there has been a warning sign, but that is not much of a deterrent to children.And to families
here who do not yet read English well. I have spent time weeding at a local park,and I just don't understand why a regular weeding
is not a better choice than a periodic spraying. Instead of spending money on Round-Up, maybe the Department could purchase
weeding stools, so that it is less hard on the backs of employees to weed.
A playground is a safe sanctuary space for families. It must provide our children the exercise space to grow up strong&happy,
without being exposed to poison.
Please pass Bill 91,and support a better future for us all. No more Glyphosate in County Parks& let's give our keikis a better play
space.
