RE: Bill 91 to Ban the Use of Glyphosate-Based Pesticides in County Parks, Etc.
TESTIMONY:
I oppose Bill 91, Draft 2, because our operations use glyphosate products to control
various noxious plants, invasive species, and grasses harmful to our crops and the
local environment as a whole.
Ranching activities involve a whole range of agricultural materials, methods and
tools aimed to supply the community with clean, disease free, nutritious, and overall
healthy products. From our tree nursery, to plant crops, to healthy cows & calves,
to shelter crops and beneficial cover crops,we need safe herbicides used judiciously
and `on-label', to effectively and efficiently control pests.
This Bill is arguably the beginning of the end for the use of glyphosate products on
Hawaii Island, and our team opposes the implementation of more restrictive
ordinances to limit their use on our property. The Bill's language merely puts into
law the current practices of the County of Hawaii, and in no way affects public
safety,while providing environmental activists a wedge to begin the next limitation
on our rights to conduct responsible, safe and healthy food practices for our
community.
