Subject: Bill 102 - parking on the street
Aloha council members,
Apologies for not being totally in the know on this specific area where parking is planned to be prohibited in this bill.
However, as access to coastal areas becomes more jammed up on the West side of our island, the issue of where
people can park to access the shoreline becomes more crucial. Though it's not always favorable to allow more and
more car parking, it's important that beach and coastal access for the public are reasonably provided,(i.e., that parking
exists a short distance from where a person could conceivably walk or bike to the shoreline). In North Kona, there'll
be a time in the not-so-distant-future when, if you don't get a parking place at, say Kohanaiki, you won't be able to
get there at all: No bus service, no parking on the highway, no beach parking at nearby businesses—the closest
parking miles away. (And even more of a kicker is when all of the parking is taken up by tourists/visitors.)
Again, I'm not as familiar with the area in question as I should be to comment on it specifically, but I ask that council
members take into consideration a domino affect of limiting— forever and by code—parking that may provide
critical access to public areas and how to better manage that situation as it already exists in some areas of West
Hawai'i.
