I was born and raised in the Lower Puna area and my ancestral family lines also come from the area. I currently live along Highway 137 in the Kikala-Keokea subdivision. Throughout my whole life I have always found driving along Highway 137 as such a beautiful drive to take with myself as well as with my family. However, I have noticed in the past 10 years the drive through Kehena has been stressful and chaotic. There have been incidents where I have been verbally attacked by someone walking on the road without looking for oncoming traffic and cussing at me as I drove past, I have also had to stop due to someone walking along the road and I am unable to past because of oncoming traffic, another time I nearly had to swerve into oncoming traffic due to another vehicle pulling out their parking spot alongside of the road to pull in front of me. The most tragic incident that has happened was when 28 year old Maile Kalanui had her car broken into, stolen, and she got hit with it, leaving her fighting for her life at Queens Medical Center. By the grace of our Lord, she has survived but will be limited to what she is capable of doing due to her injuries she sustained. I have also seen children there and I could not stop thinking that what if there was a child involved in this situation, Maile is a strong woman overcoming her tragedy, but could an 8 year old have survived such a tragedy? We need those signs to prevent such tragedies from happening. I pray and hope Bill No. 102 gets passed so everyone can still enjoy this beautiful drive without the craziness that is happening on Highway 137, at Kehena. Mahalo for your time and patience.
