Aloha Council Members,
I strongly oppose the nomination of Mr. Nelson to the Leeward Planning
Commission. The commission needs more Kananka Maoli voices that represent the
true culture and needs of Hawai'i County. Placing another developer will add nothing
more than unbridled development that caters to the wealthy non-residents and ends up
being detrimental to serving the needs for children of affordable housing, both rental and
home ownership. Non-residents contribute absolutely nothing to our income tax base
and is in fact a drain to funding the dire needs of our communities. Case in point the
area has thousands of millionaire and many billionaire residents, however that's
definitely not reflected within our society. Our hospital is subpar as are our schools,
there are zero cultural facilities or museums on the leeward side. You would think some
would love to fund a Schwab Cardiac Wing at the Kona hospital. Or a Dell Cultural and
Arts Center similar to the MACC on Maui. Or a Walton Exploratorium. All establishments
that could serve our citizens while attracting high quality tourism vs the mass quantity
tourism quandary we find ourselves saddled with.
We need someone who will lead us to a better future.
