Aloha Hawai°i County Councilmembers,

This letter is being submitted in opposition to the nomination of Shane Vincent to the
Leeward Planning Commission. According to the communication submitted by Mayor Roth,
the nominee is a fifty-year resident of Hawaii who has been involved as a project manager,
development manager, business director, and project engineer for various businesses and
residential projects. The letter also mentions that Mr. Vincent is interested in "promoting
economic growth and development in Hawaii in a sustainable way."
Unfortunately, due to Mr. Vincent's absence at the Planning Committee meeting where his
nomination was first heard, we are unclear what Mr. Vincent means by wanting to support
sustainable economic growth and development. Like previous failed nominations to the
Leeward Planning Commission, Mr. Vincent represents a special interest as his own
company, Vincent Construction Management, is closely tied to development and
construction in the very region he would be making recommendations and
decisions on as a commissioner.
As a 50 year resident, here in the Kona District, specifically Holualoa, I have seen so much
development that does not help the residents, but instead, mostly business entities that will
do very well by it. I realize that the amount of property taxes that are received by these
types of development will be much greater than from residential, affordable
development. However, it is time we start looking out for our community. How many of our
children will need to leave because they cannot afford a home in their own home state! The
Planning Commission needs to be made up of people that do not have a business stake in the
decisions made.
