Statement of the Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters—SUPPORT for Bill 112
Chair Kierkiewicz,Vice Chair Villegas, and Members of the Council,
The Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters would like to offer their strongly support plans for Kumu Hou
at Waikoloa. Kumu Hou is committed to using union labor throughout the project's development,
supporting hundreds of local laborers and local families and showcasing a deep commitment to Hawaii
Island.
Kumu Hou is good for Hawaii Island and our community.Timeshares are resilient and stable, qualities
we need to leverage as we recover from the pandemic's harsh effects on our island and our state. After
an economic downturn, timeshares are generally the first to return to operation and enjoy higher
occupancy than hotels.
Because timeshare owners return more often than hotel guests, they tend to have a greater
appreciation and respect for our community, land and culture. Hawai'i's timeshare vacationers,on
average, spend over$4,000 per trip, funneling money directly into our local economy. And, unlike short-
term vacation rentals, timeshares ensure visitors do not encroach into our community spaces and
neighborhood areas. Simply put, timeshare visitors are some of our state's most reliable, highest
spending guests.
We need an economic boost, and Kumu Hou at Waikoloa will provide that and so much more for Hawai'i
Island's residents. This project is a substantial investment in Waikoloa and the future of Hawai'i Island
and another example of the thoughtful stewardship the Waikoloa Land Company has provided for over
40 years.
