Subject: Support for Kumu Hou at Waikoloa
Mr. Chairman and members of the Hawaii County Council:
My name is Ken Melrose and I reside in Kealakekua. I support the
proposed amendments to the Master SMA for the Waikoloa Beach Resort
and the site specific zoning amendments to enable the Kumu Hou project. I
ask for your favorable consideration of this application.
As one of the original Major Resort Designations established in the General
Plan, Waikoloa has over a long period of time been a valuable contributor
to the economy of the Island of Hawaii. The Master SMA wisely established
known targets for maximum number of units, thus allowing Waikoloa Land
Company to work toward maximizing economic benefits to the Island of
Hawaii, while adapting to changing market trends. At the same time,
Waikoloa Land Company has fulfilled its many conditions of its various
approvals in productive ways. Aside from the tax revenues generated, a
vibrant community has grown with unrivaled beach and shoreline access,
accessible and well interpreted cultural sites, resident golfing rates and
diverse visitor amenities. Public parks, land for many affordable housing
units and a public Elementary and Intermediate school have been BUILT.
Waikoloa Land Company is a valuable member of the Island community
and I am proud to have had a constructive role in that during my 15 years
working there. Kumu Hou builds on the successful and low impact
development around the King's Course, while honoring the open space
setback commitments made to minimize visual impacts.
Waikoloa Beach Resort is a major visitor focal point and I ask for your
favorable consideration of this adaption to market demands within the
previously established parameters of their SMA.
Respectfully Submitted,
Ken Melrose Come
