Subject: Testimony in favor of Waikoloa Resort's Kumu Hou Project
Aloha,
The purpose of this letter is to document my support for Kumu Hou at Waikoloa. As a full-time resident
of Waikoloa Beach Resort's original condominium community,The Shores at Waikoloa Beach Resort, my
family and 1 are in a position to be directly impacted by any potential plans as a part of this project.
I currently serve as the President of the Board of Directors for our Association of Apartment Owners for
The Shores, and as such I have had the opportunity to be kept informed about Kumu Hou as the plans
have progressed, and to pass information along to the board and owners in our community. My husband
and I are also members of the Waikoloa King's Golf Club and enjoy at least two rounds of golf a week at
the Resort's golf courses.
A steward of the land in Waikoloa Beach Resort for forty years, Waikoloa Land Company has served the
community at large and our local community well. With the Kumu Hou project,Waikoloa Land Company
has the opportunity to improve the master-resort for the benefit of both the Resort community as well as
Hawaii Island as a whole.
The project will certainly create economic momentum and an investment in our communities during a
time when it is badly needed.
It is my understanding that there is a commitment for a portion of each timeshare sale to be set aside to
fund an endowment for The Waikoloa Foundation. This endowment will ensure The Waikoloa
Foundation's efforts—toward education, environmental stewardship and culture-can continue into the
future, allowing the Foundation to expand its impact for the people of Hawaii Island long beyond the
work of the Waikoloa Land Company.
Our family and neighbors are particularly excited about the benefit of the new public parks and trails for
community use, as well as the new amenities —community center, retail space, operations center and
parking — ensuring support for the timeshare units does not infringe upon existing facilities and
infrastructure. We very much appreciate the plan, which includes investments to establish a cultural
center in the Parker Ranch Recreational Building. Questions remain about the plan forworkforce housing,
which Waikoloa Land staff are getting to the developer for that portion of the project.
I urge your support for Kumu Hou as an investment in Waikoloa and the future of our Hawai'i Island
'ohana.
Mahalo nui loa,
