Kierkiewicz, Chair Rebecca Villegas,Vice Chair Statement of the Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters—SUPPORT for Bill 112 Chair Kierkiewicz,Vice Chair Villegas,and Members of the Council, We strongly support plans for Kumu Hou at Waikoloa.Waikoloa Land Company has a proven history of being a thoughtful steward of the Kohala Coast and is deeply invested in our community's future.Their dedication to Hawaii Island runs deep,and Kumu Hou is committed to using union labor throughout the project's development,supporting hundreds of local laborers and local families. Simply put, Kumu Hou is good for Hawaii Island and will ensure meaningful opportunities for our local community and workforce. The Waikoloa Land Company's plans for Kumu Hou were thoughtfully developed with the community's best interests at heart.The project will ensure the creation of no less than 140 affordable workforce rental housing units for kama'aina, meeting a critical need here on the Kohala Coast and throughout the state.Although the Waikoloa Land Company has already fulfilled its affordable housing requirements, they are committed to creating even more housing opportunities for island residents because of their aloha for this community. For over 40 years,Waikoloa Land Company has done so much to steward and protect the natural environment, history and culture of this remarkable place. Now,they are ensuring that it will be taken care of for generations to come.A portion of each timeshare sale from Kumu Hou will be set aside to fund a $45 million endowment for The Waikoloa Foundation.This endowment through Kumu Hou is a lasting promise to the community. It will ensure The Waikoloa Foundation's efforts toward education, environmental stewardship and culture can continue in perpetuity, allowing The Foundation to expand its impact for the people of Hawai'i Island long beyond the work of the Waikoloa Land Company.
