Aloha Members of the Hawaii County Council:
My name is Avila Loomis and I'm here to testify about the workforce Housing solution as part of Kumu Hou.
I work as a esthetician at Mauna Lani Spa and My partner works as an security patrol officer at Mauna
Lani.
My partner has been looking for housing that works for his income level. He feeling very discouraged
because he make almost the same salary as a firefighter cadet but can not find something reasonably
affordable. There is hardly any housing available and what is available, is way too expensive for even a
person with good salary.
I myself would like to be able to move out my parents home eventually to really start my life as a young
adult and learn independence. However, I don't see that happening for myself anytime in the near future
unfortunately because of the currently rent prices.
I feel for the people that are not as fortunate as myself that have a long commute to the resorts for work; like my
partner. The gas prices are crazy high right now and the miles and wear put on their cars is critical. My point is, there
needs to be other OPTIONS for people that live on the east but want the make the salary the west side provides.
Options like Kumu Hou is all I'm asking for.
Mahalo,
Avila Loomis
