Faith Action for Community Equity is a grassroots, interfaith 501 c3 nonprofit
organization driven by a deep spiritual commitment to improving the quality of life for
"t all who live in Hawaii. Our members work together to address the root causes of
systemic justice challenges facing our communities.
Aloha Chair Maile Medeiros David,Vice Chair Aaron Chung and councilmembers,
¢` ` Faith Action for Community Equity writes in SUPPORT of Bill 111, which would
r_:ctor
appropriate at least 75 percent of the property tax revenue that is currently collected
from second homes valued over$2,000,000 to homeless programs.
For the past 25 years, Faith Action members have consistently identified the lack of
affordable housing as one of the top issues facing local families, especially for those
experiencing homelessness who face barriers to safe and stable affordable housing.The
passage of Bill 111 and appropriation would adequately fund programs that provide
much needed resources and expand the reach of community partners providing direct
service.
With federal COVID money drying up in September, and state funding that is unreliable
and inadequate, we urge counties to invest in effective, evidence-based programs that
assist the most vulnerable among us to avoid and overcome homelessness.
