Subject: Support of Bill 111
Members of County Council.
.°
Access to affordable housing has become an increasingly dire situation in
Hawaii County. The economic slowdown and closings during the pandemic
have affected incomes for small-business owners and workers. Increased real
estate prices due to mainland purchasers and the lure of vacation rentals have j
taken much existing affordable housing off the market or out of reach of
lower-income local families. Current minimum-wage workers struggle to
meet the basic costs of living in our island community.
Services for the homeless especially those with mental illness - stretch our
resources and outreach facilities.
Families with children are among the most vulnerable of our local
community. Food and shelter insecurity too often lead to family turmoil and
poor school performance. Not just the current crisis, but the future of our
island community are at stake.
We urge you to support Bill 111 to address these issues.
Sincerely,
Clyde and Sarah Shiraki
